Know Your Formats

Choose the right format for your use case. Each has unique strengths.

WebP Recommended

Google's modern format. Up to 34% smaller than PNG and 26% smaller than JPEG with equal or better quality. Supports transparency and animation. Ideal for the web.

AVIF Next-Gen

AV1 Image Format — the best compression available. Significantly smaller than WebP at equivalent quality. Requires Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, or Safari 16+.

PNG

Lossless compression. Perfect for graphics, logos, and images requiring transparency (alpha channel). Larger file sizes but zero quality loss. Universal browser support.

JPG / JPEG

Best for photographs. Lossy compression achieves small file sizes. Does not support transparency — transparent areas are filled with a background color (white by default).

GIF

Limited to 256 colors per frame but supports animation and simple transparency. Legacy format — consider WebP for animated images. Great for simple graphics and icons.

BMP

Windows Bitmap — uncompressed, pixel-perfect format. Very large file sizes but preserves every bit of original data. Used in some legacy Windows applications.
